LDK South Africa Project Case Study: A Panoramic Padel Court Designed and Manufactured for Extreme Climate Conditions

Project Overview
In early 2023, we completed a turnkey panoramic padel court installation for a sports facility client in South Africa. This 20m × 10m standard FIP-compliant court represents our commitment to engineering durability for demanding climates — combining structural precision with aesthetic appeal for one of the world's fastest-growing padel markets.

The Challenge: Building for South African Conditions

South Africa's diverse climate presents unique engineering demands for outdoor sports infrastructure. From intense UV exposure and coastal humidity to significant temperature fluctuations, padel courts in this region must withstand conditions that accelerate corrosion and material fatigue. Our client required a solution that would maintain its structural integrity and visual appeal for years, not just seasons.

Our Solution: Material Specifications Engineered for Longevity

Based on the project's environmental requirements, we specified a fully galvanized steel-frame system with premium surface treatments and safety-focused components:
Structural Framework
  • Corner columns: 100mm × 100mm × 5mm heavy-duty galvanized steel pipe (4m height) — providing the backbone rigidity needed for the panoramic glass wall system
  • Middle & gate columns: 100mm × 50mm × 3mm precision-engineered steel tubing
  • Cross tubes: 100mm × 50mm × 3mm in 4m and 6m lengths, ensuring uniform load distribution across the 20m × 10m envelope
Surface Treatment
The entire steel structure underwent hot-dip galvanizing after welding, followed by electrostatic epoxy powder coating at 70–80μm thickness. This dual-layer protection delivers:
  • Environmental resistance against acid rain and coastal salt air
  • Anti-wet performance for humid climates
  • Long-term color retention under intense UV exposure

Safety Glass Walls

We supplied 18 panels of 12mm high-quality tempered glass (1990mm × 2980mm), certified as super-safe ultra-white glass with a self-destruct rate of less than one in ten thousand. The panoramic design maximizes spectator visibility while meeting international safety standards for impact resistance.

Court Surface

The playing surface features blue artificial turf at 12mm pile height with a density of 63,000 stitches/m². The PP+NET backing ensures dimensional stability across temperature ranges, while the 3/16" gauge provides optimal ball bounce consistency for competitive play.

The Result

The facility now operates a professional-grade panoramic padel court that has become a centerpiece of the client's sports offering. The black powder-coated frame with blue playing surface creates a visually striking contrast against the South African landscape, while the engineering specifications ensure minimal maintenance requirements despite the coastal climate.
